After our great night at Maya Beach we woke up to another beautiful Thailand morning. Our only plan for the day was to get to Krabi, but this time we weren’t going to rush. We learned from our mistakes on the trip in to the Phi Phi islands, rushing to catch the ferry is not the way to go. We went to the beach in the morning for a final swim and had coffee watching the waves crash on shore. After we slowly woke up by the water we checked out of the hostel and caught one of the mid day ferries to Krabi. The Phi Phi islands are in between Krabi and Phuket, so the ferry ride was another joyous 2 hours in the sun. This time the trip wasn’t as hot and we all brought water, so the 2 scenic hours flew by in the blink of an eye.

Travel Tip #53

After our surprisingly enjoyable boat ride, we got to Krabi and checked in to the hostel relatively early in the day. Once our stuff was away we walked around through the local markets and grabbed brunch at a random stall. Sometimes it’s fun to just people watch and observe everyone going about their day to day routine.

After lunch we went to the Tiger Cave temple and walked up the 1,237 steps to the sacred site at the top of Wat Tham Sua. The steps were uneven and some were really tall, but the views from the top were worth it. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures myself, but here is a photo from Syed Ahmad.
Once we were done with people watching and step climbing we walked down to the beach for some nice rest and relaxation. There were funny signs mounted on the trees next to the water and we walked along the shore to read them all. One of them read, “there is no glory for a lazy person however good looking.”

Relaxing on the beach and looking out over the water was bittersweet because my time in Thailand was coming to an end. Unfortunately, this was my last beach hang with the guys and after our time in the sun I had to go off on my own. We all walked back to the airport and I caught a 30 minute taxi to Krabi International Airport. Leaving the guys and Thailand was sad, but I think they needed a break from my non stop travel itinerary. They told me that the morning after I left, all of the guys made a unanimous decision to sleep in. Not my fault they can’t keep up :p
Pace Yourself
Travel Tip #54
The next leg of my trip was a flight from Krabi to Bangkok, an overnight stay in the Bangkok international airport and then a flight to Tokyo. When I got to the Krabi airport there was nobody in the gate for my flight. Not a single other passenger, so I pulled out the book I got in Cambodia and started reading. After being tied to the hip with my travel group for the past two weeks, it was nice to have some time completely alone with my thoughts.
I landed at BKK airport late in the evening and with just enough time to find some decent food in the airport food hall. I had an overnight stay in the Bangkok airport and my plan was to find a comfortable place in the airport to crash. I read online that you can find couches in different international terminals, so I headed to all of the secret spots and searched for a place to land. I looked all over the place, but I could only find one couch that was still unclaimed. I walked up to the couch at the same time that this guy from Canada did and we both decided it was only fair to share. We talked for awhile and took turns guarding the sacred couch for bathroom breaks. I felt a lot safer falling asleep with someone else near me, so all in all this worked out perfectly. When we were ready to go to bed we piled up boxes in between us to divide the couch and then both took a little nap.
Crash on a couch
Travel Tip #55
After my cat nap on the couch I woke up and jumped on the flight to Tokyo. Then, just like that, my two weeks in Thailand were over. This trip was amazing and writing these blog posts was a blast because I got to relive some of my favorite memories and experiences from the trip. I can’t wait to go back to the mountains of Chiang Mai for coconut shell curry and motorbike rides. I miss making hostel buddies in Bangkok and chasing the tide on Maya Beach in the Phi Phi islands. There were so many great moments made during our 14 days in South East Asia and I’m looking forward to the next time I get to go back. Sawadsee Kaaaaaaaaaa 🙂
